Tell Setell about your shop

Overview

Your shop profile is the short answer to "what can this shop actually do?" — the equipment you work with, the specialty work you run in-house versus send out, the materials you use, and a few sentences on how you run. Setell reads it every time it drafts, so a job gets judged against your real capability instead of a generic one.

It's one card in Settings, it takes a few minutes, and it's free on every plan.

This sharpens the estimate; it never replaces your judgment. Job conditions stay your read.

Before you start

  • Nothing to install and no plan requirement — the profile is on every plan, including Free.
  • Applying a trade playbook first is worth it: the card then speaks your trade's vocabulary (a landscaper sees Equipment, a machine shop sees machines). See docs/playbooks.

Fill it in

  1. Go to Settings and find the Shop profile card.
  2. Equipment — name each thing your quotes get built around and how many you have. Add a capacity or tooling note if it matters ("30×16×20 in travels, 4th axis"). Up to 25 entries.
  3. Specialty & subcontracted work — each process you offer, marked in-house or outsourced. Put the vendor and lead time in the note for anything you send out. Up to 15 entries.
  4. Materials commonly used — the materials you actually run. Up to 40.
  5. How you run — free-form, up to 2,000 characters. Typical lead times, crew size, work you turn away.
  6. Save. The card saves the whole sheet at once, so what's on screen when you save is what Setell has.

What it changes

  • Drafts get better scope judgment. Setell weighs complexity, capacity, and finish fit against what you actually own and run — and flags work that looks outside your capabilities instead of quietly pricing it.
  • Proposals get a real "How we execute" section. The proposal builder writes that section straight from this sheet. Leave the sheet empty and the section is omitted rather than padded with filler. See docs/quotes/proposals.
  • Nothing here is customer-facing on its own. It's context for Setell and material for documents you choose to send.

Keep it current from anywhere

  • Studio. Ask in plain language: "add a second Haas VF-2SS" or "we now powder coat in-house." Studio patches the sheet — it merges your change in rather than replacing the whole thing, so adding a machine can't wipe your finishing list.
  • Your own agent (MCP). setell_get_shop_profile reads it and setell_update_shop_profile patches it, same sheet, same rules. See docs/mcp/capabilities.
  • Settings. The card is a full-sheet replace — it always submits everything on screen.

Whichever surface you use, it's one profile. Change it in Studio and the Settings card shows the change; change it in Settings and your agent reads the new version on its next question.

Troubleshooting

  • The card uses the wrong words for my trade. The labels come from your playbook. Apply the one that matches your work under Settings → Your trade and the vocabulary follows. See docs/playbooks.
  • My change from Studio isn't on the card. Reload the Settings page — the card reads the profile when it loads.
  • I saved and something disappeared. The Settings card replaces the whole sheet. If you had a second tab open with an older version and saved from it, save again from a freshly loaded page.
  • Still stuck → docs/reference/troubleshooting.

FAQ

  • Does this cost anything? No. The shop profile is on every plan, including Free.
  • Do I have to fill in all of it? No. Anything you add helps; anything you skip is simply not used.
  • Does my customer see it? Not directly. It shapes how Setell drafts, and it supplies the "How we execute" section if you build a proposal and choose to share it.
  • Is this the same as pricing? No. The profile is capability, not rates. Prices come from your own history and price book — see docs/import/quickbooks-history.
