The pricing pool (opt-in)

Overview

Setell prices from your own history first — that's the whole point. The pricing pool is the layer above that: an opt-in, anonymous exchange where shops contribute their price medians and, in return, get to see where the market actually sits for their kind of work.

It's off unless you turn it on, it's reciprocal (sharing is what buys the read), and it costs nothing on any plan.

Share to see the market. A band only ever appears once at least five shops share your cohort, and it never identifies any single shop.

Before you start

  • Nothing to connect. One toggle in Settings.
  • Some signed quotes of your own — the pool is built from signed-quote outcomes, so a brand-new account has nothing to contribute yet.

Turn it on

  1. Go to Settings and find the Pricing pool card.
  2. Flip Join the pricing pool.

That's it. From then on your operator-wide learned medians go into the pool anonymized, and you can read the live band for your trade and job type.

What you get, and what you give

  • You read a live band — the 25th, 50th, and 75th percentiles for your industry and job type, over a rolling 90-day window. Recency is the point: a static benchmark can't tell you what shops are charging this quarter.
  • You contribute medians, not jobs. What goes in is your aggregated price medians — never a quote, never a customer, never a line item.
  • Only your Setell signed-quote outcomes feed it. Your QuickBooks data never goes into the pool.
  • Five shops minimum, per area. A band is published only where at least five distinct opted-in shops sit in that cohort. Narrower geography means a smaller crowd, so the floor is checked again at each level — you see the most specific band that clears it, and nothing where it doesn't.

Turning it off

Flip the toggle back and reads stop immediately. You drop out of the contribution set on the next refresh. Aggregates already published stay published — they're anonymous group numbers by construction, with no way back to a single shop.

Where it fits

The pool is one input, and the weakest-ranked one. Your own history, your price book, and your purchase records all outrank it — the pool never overrides a number Setell learned from you. See docs/insights/your-patterns and docs/import/quickbooks-history.

Troubleshooting

  • I turned it on but see no band. Fewer than five opted-in shops in your cohort so far, or you have no signed quotes yet. Nothing is wrong — bands appear as the cohort fills.
  • The toggle won't move. It stays disabled until the card has loaded your current setting, so an early click can't write the wrong value. Give it a second.
  • Still stuck → docs/reference/troubleshooting.

FAQ

  • Can anyone see my prices? No. Nothing per-shop is ever published — only percentile bands computed across at least five shops.
  • Does it cost anything? No. It's free on every plan and not tied to a tier.
  • Can I read without sharing? No. The exchange is reciprocal by design.
  • Does it change my quotes on its own? No. It's context — your own data still leads, and you still review every draft.
  • Does my QuickBooks history go in? No. Only outcomes from quotes signed through Setell.
