Talk to Setell (voice)

Overview

Hands full? Don't type — talk. Tap the mic in Studio, say what you need, and Setell turns your words into a message and answers. Good for the shop floor, the truck, or when typing on a phone is a pain.

Before you start

  • A device with a microphone (your laptop or phone has one).
  • Open Setell over a secure (https) connection — your browser only allows the mic on secure sites.
  • The first time, your browser asks permission to use the mic. Tap Allow.
  • AI messages left on your plan. Talking sends a Studio message, so it draws on the same allowance typing does — see docs/account/plans. Run out and the mic stops working until your allowance resets or you upgrade.

Steps

  1. Open Studio — from the left nav, or press ⌘J (Ctrl+J on Windows) for the docked panel.
  2. Tap the mic button next to the message box.
  3. The button turns red and you'll see Listening — …s / 60s. Say what you need — for example, "Quote 50 brackets for Northwest Fabrication."
  4. Tap the mic again to stop. Setell shows Transcribing…, drops your words into the box, and sends them.
Recordings cap at 60 seconds — plenty for a normal request. The timer shows how long you've been talking.

Or just hold the space bar

Faster than finding the button: hold space, say the thing, let go. The message sends itself. Studio shows Hold space to talk under the box whenever the gesture is available.

It only takes over the space bar when space isn't doing anything else — when nothing is focused, or when the message box is focused and empty. Start typing and space is a space again. Nothing touches the microphone until you've held the key for a moment, so a passing tap never opens the mic. Press Escape mid-hold to cancel without sending.

What happens next

  • Your speech becomes text, then Setell answers the same way it would if you'd typed — drafting a quote, pulling up a job, writing a follow-up.
  • Nothing about the rules changes when you use voice: a quote still waits for your OK before it goes out (see docs/autonomy/overview).
  • If your browser doesn't support the main method, Studio automatically falls back to your browser's own voice typing — same mic button, same result.

Troubleshooting

  • No mic button. Your browser doesn't support voice input. Try Chrome, Edge, or Safari.
  • "Microphone is blocked for this site." Open site settings — the icon just left of the address bar — set Microphone to Allow, then reload the page. Don't go looking for a mic icon in the address bar: on a blocked site that icon isn't there, because the browser stops asking. While the site is blocked, holding space does nothing at all.
  • "Voice input requires HTTPS." You're on an insecure connection. Open Setell over https and retry.
  • "No speech detected." Speak a little closer to the mic, in a quieter spot, and try again.
  • "You've used all your AI messages." Voice runs on the same allowance as typed messages, and it checks before it records. Nothing is wrong with your mic — see docs/account/plans.
  • It heard you wrong. The text lands in the box before sending — read it, fix any words, and hit send.
  • Still stuck → docs/reference/troubleshooting.

FAQ

  • Do I have to talk in a special way? No — talk normally, the way you'd ask a coworker.
  • Can I fix what it heard before it sends? Your words land in the message box. If it auto-sends and got something wrong, just say it again or type the fix.
  • How long can I talk? Up to 60 seconds per recording.
  • Does it work on my phone? Yes — open Setell in your phone's browser, go to Studio in the bottom bar, and tap the mic. The Setell mobile app has its own hold-to-talk Studio too.
